All the way from the late 1960’s

Una’s café restaurant originally opened for business in the late 1960’s. An Irish lady, named Una, began operating Una’s cafe at 286 Victoria Street, Darlinghurst. She served very simple meals, such as tinned spaghetti with toast and canned beverages. The rent was $25 and was paid with the proceeds from the jukebox. A cup of coffee cost 25 cents.

Annie from Austria took over after 18 months and changed it to an Austrian style café with no menu, serving just one freshly cooked meal every day. After a few years Annie moved to 338 Victoria Street, Darlinghurst. Here the menu developed and became more varied, while retaining the Austrian/Swiss theme.

In 1997 Maggie and Wim took over and acquired the shop next door. This doubled the size of the restaurant, and (tasteful) renovations have resulted in the great restaurant it is today.

In 2000 Pieter and Geert took over, with Geert leaving in 2005. So although ownership changed every now and then, the restaurant stays the same.

The atmosphere of Una’s restaurant is casual but professional. Our team is highly qualified, with all of them having trained in hospitality, either locally or overseas.

Our home-style menu has been inspired by the foods and flavours of Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Hungary. The traditional European recipes and methods used result in delicacies that are always high in quality and taste. They are always prepared daily with the freshest ingredients. To complete your dining experience, we serve a range of imported beers and spirits, including our famous schnapps.
